One of the Biggest Causes of  Lion’s Clubs is Eyesight for All!

**Check Out this Opportunity for Fellow East Windsor Chamber Members, Businesses and Community Members to make a Difference for Our Youth here in East Windsor!

The East Windsor Lions use a pediatric eye screening program to test children’s eyesight and identify possible abnormalities that can be corrected if discovered early.

They have been using the equipment at the Broad Brook Elementary School to assist the school nurse in checking the students’ vision.

Some of the equipment is well over twelve years in use.   Like your mobile phones, cameras and other such technology, years and use put a toll of these types of devices.

Since the State of Connecticut Legislators recently ruled that digital screening was equal to or better than the formerly-used Snellen Chart, East Windsor school district can now allow us to go into the middle school as well as the elementary school, to screen All Students, not just those mandated by the State.

This will be a great benefit for the entire East Windsor School System in that it will free up the Nurse for other tasks and at the same time provide a more comprehensive test of Our Student’s vision.

The program to be used was developed at Yale and has been successful in identifying several conditions that might otherwise not been found.

Having just replaced our machine which was twelve years old with a   new Welch Allyn Machine(which was provided to East Windsor Lions Club through a program with Yale) there was a remarkable difference in the speed and accuracy of the test results.

During our screening sessions, they usually borrow a second machine from a different club to facilitate the process to be able to screen twice as many students in the same time.   Those machines are twelve years old as well.

The EWLC volunteers are trained on this equipment but the older machines are taking longer to focus on the eyes to get a reading.

If a another new Welch Allyn Machine  could be provided, the EWLC feels confident that they will provide a more precise result and be better opportunity to pick up a problem if it exists.

The cost of these Welch Allyn machines is about $8,500.

The EWLC plans to apply for  a grant to East Windsor Greater Together Fund during the next round of donations to Our Community however those grant awards are limited to $5,000.

The East Windsor Lions Club is  hoping that some of Our Fellow East Windsor Chamber Members, Local Businesses or the Community would be willing to help make up the difference for the benefit of Our Students.
