Duane Betts & Palmetto Motel + Dustbowl Revival @ Broad Brook Opera House
Oct 20 @ 7:00 pm – 11:00 pm

Duane Betts & Palmetto Motel + Dustbowl Revival

Friday, October 20, 2023 –

By the time Duane Betts began working on Wild & Precious Life, his debut solo album, he had already spent the better part of two decades creating his own version of guitar-slinging, story-driven American rock & roll. He had spent 10 years playing guitar alongside his father, legendary Allman Brother Dickey Betts. He released an EP, Sketches of American Music, and co-founded Allman Betts Band.

But the need to create a full-length solo LP gnawed at him, one that nodded to his roots while simultaneously pushing ahead. Wild & Precious Life offers up a timeless version of American music, a mix of blues, rock, folk, and country that could have blanketed the FM radio airwaves during any number of decades. It’s a modern album inspired by some of the best parts of the past, full of sharply crafted songs written in a state of deep reflection and captures the emotional release of overcoming struggle, appreciating the fleeting nature of life, and celebrating the joy of being present.

Dustbowl Revival has always been about pushing the boundaries of what American roots music can be. Celebrating over a decade of sonic adventuring and playing thousands of shows together in ten countries and counting, the group has collected a devoted fanbase coast-to-coast. The always evolving group of string and brass players led by founding members Z. Lupetin, Josh Heffernan, and Ulf Bjorlin are excited to welcome a new wave of talent to the band, after emerging from a pandemic touring hiatus.

With the band’s emotional new single “Beside You” and 2020’s ambitious full length Is It You, Is It Me, they wanted to strike into new terrain. Many of the songs feel like small theater pieces coming to life verse by verse. An amazing young talent in Lashon Halley has stepped in to bring new life to the songs, matching Lupetin’s intense vocal range with her own. With a big brass-and-strings band building around the voices, Is It You, Is It Me isn’t afraid to explore the personal and political tension that the group may have shied away from facing before. It transitioned the group from a “roots dance party band” that continues to thrive on the festival circuit, to a nuanced ensemble embracing more soulful territory without losing their original fire.
