It’s been a long 2+ years for all of us and we hope you’re hanging in there and staying connected to friends and loved ones. If there’s one lesson COVID has taught us, it’s how crushing isolation can be for the body and soul. This has been especially true for those who ride with us. We’re often a lifeline because we provide “door-through-door” rides, picking people up at their residences and helping them into our cars and bringing them directly to their destination’s door, and we offer rides wherever they want to go within our service area.
It seems like such a small thing, but not being able to make it to a bus stop or needing to get to a location off a route means they’re stuck. That trip doesn’t happen day after day and that’s a slippery slope. That’s one of the reasons it was so important to us that we didn’t shut down during the pandemic. We knew that we were often the ride people needed to access food, supplies, and healthcare.
This has been tough on us as an organization. Once COVID shutdowns began, we went from giving an average of 700 rides a month down to just under 200. We will give over 800 rides this month and are so glad we have been able to be there for those who needed us. However, since we had to rely on paid drivers instead of volunteers for health and safety concerns, which have been our highest priority, our expenses did not go down with the number or rides.
